When homosexuality becomes an instrument of political struggle

There’s a huge difference between ‘coming out’ and being ‘outed’. The former is often the choice of the individual in question – the latter not. The latest case in Italian national press is concerning a well-known Italian journalist who’s had to deal with public statements, tweeted by another colleague and, as such, being ‘outed’.

For Kate Forbes, a Scottish politician who served as Cabinet Secretary for Finance and the Economy (2020-2023), same-sex marriage, and the idea of having a child out of wedlock, is “wrong”. The question remains open: are voters happy for a politician, or a leader, to protect their cultural and political interests if they consider them “wrong”?

For the past ten years’ same sex couples have been able to marry, since the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in 2013. Previously, same sex couples could enter into civil partnerships which provided most but not all the legal rights afforded to married couples. Whilst homosexual couples are more widely accepted than in the past, there can still be issues, such as family rejection and hostility, which prevents some couples taking the step to marriage.
